Kocktails with Karly: The Whiskey Smash

Welcome to Kocktails with Karly! Let’s do this!

I was pressed for time this week… Oh, vacation, how much preparation you doth require! I didn’t make it to the liquor store and kept my fridge like a barren wasteland, empty and void of anything remotely helpful. I stood at my fridge surveying the meager things that made the cut this week: mint… lemons…wow, that’s it. Way to go, KJ.

I’ve really been feeling bourbon whiskey lately. Feeling it in a major way, which is bizarre because I never found it particularly palatable before Baby Fox arrived on the scene. Beer and wine were my ride or dies before I had children; now I’m pretty blah about beer and have been leaning towards the wine and the whiskey. Childbearing changes more than your hips, apparently!

So, back to the slim pickings in the fridge and my desperation for a new cocktail. After some extensive Pinterest soul searching I landed on the Whiskey Smash as this week’s Kocktail – let’s boogie! (Omg who am I…)

Whiskey Smash

Ingredients

  • 2oz whiskey
  • 1bar spoon simple syrup
  • 4-6 mint leaves
  • 4 lemon wedges

Instructions

  • Muddle mint and lemon in a shaker.
  • Add ice, whiskey, and syrup. Shake and serve over ice. Garnish with mint or lemon slice.

It really is quite lovely to look at. Look at it bask in its classy AF-ness.  I feel like I should be sipping this on the porch of a plantation house in Georgia. It’s just too pretty.

If I’m being honest, I didn’t love the flavor combination of the lemon and mint. One or the other with whiskey is splendid, but together it just wasn’t my cup of tea. Each sip I took just reminded me of gin, and you know I feel about THAT. Perhap with some sophistication of my palate I can revisit the Whiskey Smash in time, and although I didn’t love it, I’m the better for having tried.

What’s your favorite whiskey cocktail these days, hmmm?
Cheers!

  1. This looks delicious! I’ve done something that is similar with a lemon-lime soda instead of simple syrup, but this recipe is more cut-the-crap. Makes me happy!

BTW I’ve heard that, “A shark on whiskey is mighty risky.” Just sayin.
